A referral is required. Please visit your GP clinic

What can I expect from the service?

On referral to our service as an outpatient you will receive an appointment in a timeframe in keeping with the urgency of your condition. At your outpatient appointment you will be seen by one of our Infectious Diseases specialists who will perform a medical assessment, review and organise investigations and formulate a management plan for you. They will give you detailed advice about your health and prescribe medications if needed. Information about your health will be communicated back to your referring doctor unless your request otherwise.

Interpreters are available in most languages at Northern Health; we will do our best to ensure an interpreter is available for your appointment

What do I bring/need for my appointment?

Please bring with you:

  • Any relevant blood or medical imaging test results
  • Any relevant medical imaging (x-rays or scans) that are printed or in electronic format (if you have them).
  • A list of your current medications.

Service Overview

The Northern Health Infectious Diseases Department provides high quality Infectious Diseases service to patients in the north of Melbourne and the surrounding areas. We see a wide range of conditions in both our outpatient clinic and on the inpatient wards including HIV, sexual health, TB, travel medicine, orthopaedic infections and general infectious diseases. The Department’s inpatient service admits and manages patients with specific infectious diseases problems. Our Department’s staff comprises 6 experienced specialist Infectious Diseases physicians, and advanced trainees in Infectious Diseases. We also have nurses and pharmacists with special training in HIV and TB care attending our outpatient department.

  • Sexual Health
  • General infectious diseases

Exclusion Criteria

Hepatitis B and C – these referrals should generally be directed to the Gastroenterology Service however we will manage patients with co-infection with viral hepatitis and other infections.

How to Refer:

All referrals to Northern Health should be sent to:

  • Reason for referral
  • Working diagnosis
  • Medical History – current and relevant past
  • Current Medications
  • Relevant Investigations and pathology – please include reports including microbiology results. Electronic copies of relevant radiology would be appreciated.
  • Current management of condition and response to this
