What is the Service?

The Northern Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) consists of eighteen beds and provides intensive care services to a diverse case-mix of around 1,700 patients each year. The ICU team also provides outreach services to the hospital through the ICU liaison nurse and Medical Emergency Team (MET) and works closely with all the other specialised services in the hospital.

What can I expect from the service?

The ICU department provides around the clock care to critically ill people and therefore provides access 24 hours a day for family and friends to visit and call.

Our Team

As well as medical and nursing staff the Intensive Care Unit’s multidisciplinary team is made up of a variety of health care professionals including physiotherapists, pharmacists, social workers, ward clerks and patient service assistants.

Service Overview

The Northern Hospital’s Intensive Care Department Unit (ICU) consists of eighteen beds and provides intensive care services to a diverse case-mix of around 1,700 patients each year. The ICU team consists of qualified intensive care nurses and medical intensive care specialists, and also provides outreach services to the hospital through the ICU liaison nurse and medical emergency team (MET) and works closely with all the other specialised services within Northern Health. We provide non-invasive and invasive ventilation for patients requiring advanced respiratory support renal replacement therapy, advanced haemodynamic monitoring, post-operative support and many other services to support the needs of the critically ill and their next of kin.

Training and Education

The Northern Hospital Intensive Unit provides or supports medical, nursing and allied health professionals’ training at undergraduate, postgraduate and specialist levels.

Nursing education includes a Supported Transition to Excellence in Practice (STEP) programme for fully qualified registered nurses wanting to experience ICU. We also provide a 12 month post graduate certificate in critical care nursing.
