What is the Service?

Northern Heart, the Cardiology department at Northern Health is a very busy and rapidly expanding department, offering a range of inpatient and outpatient cardiac services to patients in Melbourne’s northern community and regional Victoria.

The department was established in October 2007 and is led by the inaugural Director, Associate Professor William van Gaal.  He is supported by a dedicated team of cardiac nurses, surgeons and cardiologists, working across a number of disciplines, including but not limited to, heart disease and heart failure, electrophysiology, intervention and research.

What can I expect from the service?

The team currently provide the following services across a number of locations:

Northern Hospital (185 Cooper St, Epping VIC)

  • 24 hour cardiac emergency service
  • Outpatient clinics
  • Cardiac Cath Lab
    For invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures such as angiograms; electrophysiology ablations, pacemaker insertions etc.
  • Cardiac Unit for inpatients

A 28 bed ward with 8 dedicated coronary care beds and 20 telemetry enabled beds.

  • Cardiac research
  • Cardiology investigations
    for example: echocardiograms; halter monitors; stress tests etc.

Epping Medical & Specialist Centre (230 Cooper St, Epping VIC)

  • Outpatient clinics
  • Cardiology investigations

We are also looking to commence outpatient clinics at the Broadmeadows Hospital and Craigieburn campus in the near future.

What can I expect from the service?

Whether you are an inpatient at Northern Health, or an outpatient attending an appointment, you will you will always receive professional, personalised advice and highest quality in health care.

We are also able to provide an interpreter where required.

What should I bring to my appointment?

For all appointments, you will be required to bring the following:

  • Medicare card
  • Healthcare card
  • Details of your GP
  • Private health insurance card
  • A list of any current medications

If you have an appointment for an exercise stress test or stress echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart), please wear comfortable, loose clothing and runners, as these tests involve walking and running on a treadmill.

Cardiology service offered at Northern Health include:

  • Outpatient consultations,
  • Cardiac holter and event monitors and blood pressure monitoring
  • Electrocardiography – including stress ECG’s
  • Echocardiograms – including stress echocardiograms; dobutamine stress echocardiograms and transoesophageal echocardiograms
  • Cardiac nuclear medicine imaging
  • Cardiac MRI
  • Heart failure management
  • Non-invasive CT coronary angiography
  • Invasive Coronary Angiography
  • Percutaneous coronary angiography including stenting,
  • Cardiac electrophysiology services (devices and ablation)
  • Tilt tables
  • 24 hour emergency service for patients suffering acute cardiac symptoms.
