What is the  Service?

Northern Health provides Gestational Diabetes Services for pregnant women who develop Diabetes during pregnancy. Gestational Diabetic clinics are held at the Northern Hospital, Broadmeadows Hospital and Craigieburn Health Service, meaning that you can continue your pregnancy and diabetic care at the one site.

What can I expect from the service?

Women who develop diabetes in pregnancy can expect to see a Diabetic Nurse Educator, and a Dietician to learn about how to manage your diabetes in pregnancy.  You may attend a group session, or an individual session if you require an interpreter.  

How to refer to the service

A referral is required. Please visit your GP clinic

What do I bring/need for my appointment?

Results of your Glucose Tolerance Test only if your GP ordered this test.

Service Overview

Gestational Diabetic Clinics are provided at the Northern Hospital, Craigieburn Health Service and Broadmeadows Hospital for women who develop diabetes in pregnancy or have pre-existing diabetes.  Diabetic Nurse Educators, Dieticians and Endocrinologists as well as Obstetricians and midwives work in these multidisciplinary teams.

Inclusion criteria:

  • Positive Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT)in Pregnancy following ADIPS Guidelines:

Fasting >5 mmol/l

1 hr >9.9 mmol/l

2hrs >8.4 mmol/l

 Exclusion criteria:

Non Diabetic
