Breastfeeding Service

Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) are available to help women that attend Northern Health. We provide breastfeeding support during the hospital stay or after going home. Common reasons for accessing our service include;

  • Positioning and attachment advice.
  • Management of sore nipples.
  • Assessment of milk supply.
  • Medications and breastfeeding.
  • Feeding support for twins or triplets.
  • Cleft lip and palate.
  • Mastitis.
  • Breast and nipple thrush.
  • Assessment of Tongue-tie.
  • Breast pump hire.
  • Antenatal breastfeeding classes.
  • Any other breastfeeding concerns, including concerns arising during pregnancy.

What can I expect from the service?

A one to one consultation with a lactation consultant. Interpreters are provided if needed. A partner or support person is most welcome. You will receive a care plan at the conclusion of the appointment.

What do I bring/need for my appointment?

Please bring ;

  • Your Medicare card.
  • Your Child Health Record Book (green book).
  • A list of any medicines that you take.

How much does it cost?

There is no cost for families with a Medicare card.

Service Overview

Breastfeeding appointments with a Lactation Consultant are available for mothers seeking information, assistance, education, reassurance and counselling on breastfeeding and infant feeding while pregnant and after the baby is born.  This service offers the community health care services where they are needed most – close to home

The breastfeeding service enables the mother to have a personalised consultation with a Lactation Consultant and a breastfeeding plan will be provided. It provides the mother with the opportunity to discuss any questions about infant feeding, breastfeeding, sleep patterns and settling techniques, or any other aspects of parenting. There is no charge for holders of a Medicare card.

Inclusion criteria:

Pregnant and postnatal women birthing with Northern Health.

Exclusion criteria:

Babies over 3 months of age.
