Research Active Departments
This page provides a list of Research Active Departments which may be recorded in applications for governance authorisation (e.g. under Section 3.3(a) of the SSA form). Clearly identifying the department and the appropriate Head of Department ensures that the correct area of responsibility is engaged and that there is clear accountability for oversight and reporting metrics. Within the SSA, it is important that the specific department or unit is named, listing only the broader Division is not sufficient for this section.
In line with the NCTGF User Guide, departments form part of the clinical trial workforce. This workforce includes Principal and Associate Investigators, trial managers, research nurses, study coordinators, research assistants, and other personnel who support research activities within their department. Together, they ensure that trials are conducted to a high standard, with appropriate oversight and alignment to organisational governance.
This is a list of Research Active Departments. Those with open Clinical Trials are listed in bold. This is not an exhaustive list of all Northern Health Departments conducting research.

Nursing and Midwifery
As nurses and midwives, we are at the forefront of patient care and have unique insights into clinical issues and challenges. Research led by nurses and midwives is essential for advancing nursing/midwifery practice, addressing healthcare disparities and inequities, improving patient care outcomes, and contributing to the broader field of healthcare through evidence-based practices and innovations.
At Northern Health we are looking to build on the interest and create avenues towards growing nurse/midwife-led research. For NH staff interested to find out more, please visit here.
