Aged Care Employee Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the extraordinary contributions of our nurses, personal care workers, lifestyle staff, hospitality teams, cleaners, administrative employees and volunteers.

Their dedication, compassion and commitment make a meaningful difference every day, and we thank them for the vital role they play in enriching the lives of those in our care.

The theme of this year’s celebration, #ThanksForCaring, highlights the vital role aged care employees play in enriching the lives of older people through compassionate care, meaningful connections and unwavering dedication.

The impact of our staff is perhaps best reflected in the words of residents, families and employees.

Silke Goetzl shared her appreciation for the care and support her husband, John, has received since arriving at Merv Irvine. “My husband has only been here a week, but it seems like he has settled in really well and that is because of the high level of care. Everyone has passion and kindness in them. A weight has been lifted off my shoulders since my husband came here. He is happy to engage with staff who are brilliant in all they do.”

Another family member, Gudip Mann, expressed her gratitude for the care provided to her husband, Ramranjit. “I am very grateful for the care my husband receives. I feel I am one of the team. Staff are consistently supportive, caring and polite. The staff communication skills are excellent and I am always kept up to date. ‘Thank you’ feels too small a word for what you have given to my husband.”

For many employees, working in aged care is more than a profession. It is a calling.

Trina Egan, who has worked in frontline administration within Aged Care Mental Health for 37 years across three facilities, reflected on the rewarding nature of her role and the privilege of supporting residents, families and colleagues. “Working in administration with Aged Care Mental Health Residents has been a meaningful and fulfilling experience. I feel privileged to contribute to an environment that supports the wellbeing and dignity of residents. Although my role is administrative, I understand that my work plays an important part in ensuring residents, their families and the team receive the support they need.”

“I feel it is very important to take the time to listen and acknowledge the feelings of our residents and their families. This role has helped me develop greater empathy, patience and understanding of the unique challenges faced by older adults living with mental health conditions. I enjoy being part of a compassionate and supportive team and take pride in contributing to the smooth running of Merv Irvine. Working in this environment has reinforced the importance of kindness, respect, confidentiality and clear communication. It has also encouraged me to continue learning and developing my skills so I can provide the best possible support to both Residents and my colleagues.”

These reflections highlight the profound impact that aged care employees have, not only on residents but also on families who entrust their loved ones to our care.

Our Aged Care services are a special part of the broader range of services we provide to our Older Adult and Aged Services participants. The dedication demonstrated by our staff every day creates an environment where residents feel supported, valued and connected. Whether through a kind conversation, attentive care, meaningful activities or the reassurance provided to families, every interaction contributes to the wellbeing of those we serve.
