The Upper Gastro-intestinal Surgical Unit is a specialised unit that offers surgery for patients with upper gastro-intestinal tract problems, particularly those of the oesophagus and stomach

What to expect from the service?
Upper Gastro-intestinal surgeons are surgeons specialised in the treatment of the oesophagus and stomach. We provide weekly outpatient clinics to assess patients who are referred with a range of upper Gastro-intestinal conditions. Often patients referred to us already have had endoscopy or scans performed. We will arrange further tests if necessary to confirm the diagnosis and offer opinions on treatment. The patients with cancers are discussed in a dedicated Multidisciplinary (Cancer care) Meeting. When surgery is indicated, we will arrange inpatient surgery. Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is the usual technique for most conditions. Common conditions treated include gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), hiatal hernia, stomach ulcers, and benign and malignant tumours of the stomach and oesophagus.
The Upper Gastro-intestinal surgery team includes surgeons, a cancer care coordinator, a liaison nurse and dietitians.
