The Youth Early Psychosis Program (YEPP) is designed to provide early intervention mental health services for individuals aged 16-25. The program aims to reduce the prevalence, impact, and risks associated with psychosis and other mental health conditions for young people, their families, carers, and the wider community.ย ย 

The Youth Early Psychosis Program (YEPP) is designed to provide early intervention mental health services for individuals aged 16-25. The program aims to reduce the prevalence, impact, and risks associated with psychosis and other mental health conditions for young people, their families, carers, and the wider community. YEPP operates as a sub-specialty service of the Northern Area Mental Health Service (NAMHS) Noogal Clinic and Hotham Street Clinic community teams and is modelled on the latest research and clinical guidelines. โ€ฏ The program has addresses a range of diagnoses, including mood disorders, severe anxiety, eating disorders, severe personality disorders, and trauma-related conditions alongside psychosis. The length of involvement with YEPP is typically up to two years, with an additional year available for complex cases or transition needs.ย ย ย ย ย 


What to expect from the service?

The YEPP has a multidisciplinary staffing profile, including clinicians with a range of skills and expertise in delivering best practice interventions as documented in clinical guidelines. YEPP provides a range of youth-specific clinical mental health services, including: 

Comprehensive Assessment: In-depth evaluation of mental health and bio psycho social needs. 

Development of Care and Risk Management Plans: Personalized plans to address individual challenges. 

Assertive Intervention, Treatment, and Support: Tailored to the unique needs of young people. 

Family and Stakeholder Engagement: Collaboration with families, carers, and external services. 

Psychoeducation and Relapse Prevention: Support to understand mental health conditions and prevent recurrence.

The Youth Early Psychosis Program (YEPP) enables provision of early intervention mental health services targeted to the 16-25 year age group thereby reducing the prevalence and impact or risk of psychosis on young people, their families, carers and the wider community. YEPP is a sub-specialty service of the NAMHS community teams and is specifically designed and modelled to deliver youth specific clinical mental health services based on current research and clinical guidelines in the field. Over the years the YEPP model had been adapted to accommodate other diagnosis along with psychosis. The YEPP has a multidisciplinary staffing profile, including Clinicians with a range of skills and expertise in delivering best practice interventions as documented in clinical guidelines.โ€ฏ The length of time a person is actively involved with the YEPP can be up to 2 years, with the options of an additional year if the young person presents with complex needs or is likely to require transition to the Adult community mental health team.โ€ฏ  

Our YEPP Stream offers: 

  • Comprehensive assessment and development of bio- psycho social formulation.ย 
  • Development of care plan andโ€ฏ risk managementย 
  • Extensive assertive intervention,โ€ฏ treatment and support. Support are tailored to the needs of the young peopleย 
  • Engagement with family, carers and other internal and external stakeholdersย 
  • Psycho education and relapse preventionย ย 

YEPP also offers a consultative service within NAMHS and external services, which involves: 

  • Primary Consultation: Comprehensive assessment and treatment recommendations.ย 
  • Secondary Consultation: Collaborative discussions to explore mental health issues and treatment options.ย 
  • Tertiary Consultation: Guidance on service or program development for youth mental health.ย 

Inclusion Criteria: 

As a public mental health service, our services are for people with significant level of disturbance, psycho social need or concern regarding risk to themselves or others as a result of mental illness. YEPP will also consider consumers who present as being ultra-high risk for developing a psychotic disorder.โ€ฏ Common presentation may include first episode psychosis characterised by the presence of persistent positive symptoms on a daily basis, for longer than one-week duration, which may include hallucinations, delusions, bizarre and disorganised behaviour and thought disorder and may also be accompanied by negative symptoms. Other diagnosis considered include condition such as mood disorders, substance use/abuse, anxiety, eating disorders, personality disorders, PTSD and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
