The Northern Childrenโs Unit is a 22-bed ward providing specialist medical and surgical care for infants, children, and adolescents. Our multidisciplinary team offers family-centred care in a supportive, child-friendly environment, ensuring every young person feels safe, heard, and respected throughout their hospital stay.

The Northern Childrenโs Unit provides comprehensive care for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, including those requiring medical, surgical, orthopaedic, plastics, and ENT management.
Patients are supported by allied health professionals such as dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, mental health clinicians, and pharmacists. Lactation support is available for mothers of young infants.
The Unit aims to deliver holistic, compassionate, and expert care, fostering a safe, nurturing environment that supports children and their families or carers throughout their hospital journey.
What to expect from the service?
Families can expect a welcoming, family-centred environment focused on childrenโs rights, comfort, and wellbeing. Our expert team values communication, compassion, and partnership with parents and carers. The delivery of care will aim to be family-centred and holistic, striving towards a satisfying hospital experience for our patients, their families and carers. Our care is guided by the Rights of Children and Young People, ensuring all children feel heard, respected, and protected. Parentsโ concerns are valued, and we encourage and empower caregivers to raise concerns with our medical and nursing teams.
We understand that hospitals can be a daunting place for children and their parents, so we strive to make the Northern Childrenโs Unit as child and family friendly as possible. We recognise each childโs right to have a parent or guardian present, and provide facilities to support carers staying with their child. Other visitors are welcome during visiting hours. There is a play and recreational room as well as distraction boxes and equipment to help children remain entertained during their stay.
