Families where a Parent has a Mental Illness Program


Families where a Parent has a Mental Illness Program focuses on families where a parent has a mental illness.  The aim of the service is to connect the whole family to the support, resources and services they require. 

Families where a Parent has a Mental Illness Program provides resources, linkages and runs peer support groups for children (Champs), young people (Space4Us) and for parents. Families where a Parent has a Mental Illness Program also provides secondary consultation within the community mental health teams where there are families with a parent with a mental illness or mental health challenge.  


What to expect from the service?

Consumers can access the Families where a Parent has a Mental Illness Program through their Community Mental Health Clinician.   

Parents who have a mental illness or challenge and are not consumers of Northern Healthโ€™s Mental Health Program can contact the Families where a Parent has a Mental Illness coordinators for linkage into services, to be provided with resources or to refer their children into a peer support group.ย ย 


The Families where a Parent has a Mental Illness program is designed to support the Adult Community mental health teams to provide a family-inclusive (considering the needs of all family members) response to the parenting needs of consumers and the needs of their children (age 0 to 25).  

Target Group 

The Program will support consumers of adult community teams who have dependent children. The priority is on betterย understanding the needs of all families where a parent has a mental illness and ways to support the wellbeing of all family members, including children.ย 

Health Professionals and other community services, (including schools, Family Services, Maternal & Child Health Nurses) can call to arrange a consultation.
