80 Years Young: Montse’s inspiring WellAhead journey

The WellAhead community recently came together to celebrate a very special milestone, with long-time participant Montse turning 80 years young.

A familiar and much-loved face in the program since its early beginnings, Montse has been part of WellAhead’s journey as it has grown and evolved over the years. From its original home at the Wellness Lounge at Northern Hospital Epping, to the Whittlesea Community Centre at Epping Plaza, and now at Whittlesea U3A in Lalor, Montse has remained a dedicated participant every step of the way.

Last week, fellow students and friends gathered after her weekly Qigong class to celebrate her birthday with an intimate afternoon tea. A regular attendee of both the Qigong and Chair Yoga classes, Montse continues to inspire those around her with her determination, positivity and commitment to staying active.

Belinda and Mauricio, who facilitate the Qigong classes, paid tribute to Montse’s remarkable spirit. “80 years celebrating life and, like a true warrior, willing to push forward, overcome obstacles and enjoy life with all that it brings. It is a pleasure to know you and practise Qigong with you.”

“Te deseamos más aventura de la vida y la paz interna. Sigue disfrutando cada minuto. Un abrazo.”

Nilaginee, who leads the Chair Yoga classes, said Montse’s presence is felt by everyone in the room. “May you continue to be a great example to many others of the benefits of yoga, Qigong and activities alike, and may we celebrate many more birthdays with you.”

Praseetha Chathoth, facilitator of the monthly Yoga and Guided Meditation class, added, “Wishing a very happy birthday to a truly inspiring and courageous soul. It is beautiful to see you regularly in the front row of yoga class with such determination, motivating everyone around you. Keep inspiring us with your incredible spirit as we celebrate your birthday, your courage and your strength. May yoga continue to bring you peace, strength and positivity.”

Originally from Barcelona, Montserrat, known affectionately as Montse, moved to Australia more than five decades ago. A proud Catalan, she built a vibrant life in Melbourne, playing first division basketball and later founding the Melbourne Catalonian Club to help preserve and celebrate her mother tongue and culture.

Five years ago, Montse was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer after many years of being treated for what was believed to be asthma. While ongoing treatment has helped keep her cancer stable, she says managing fatigue and maintaining her mobility remain important priorities.

After discovering WellAhead through a Whittlesea U3A newsletter, Montse joined the program and quickly found a supportive community where she could exercise safely alongside others.

Reflecting on her milestone birthday, Montse said, “After six and a half years of being diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, I did not think I would get to celebrate my milestone of 80 years, but I did, and the five-day celebrations started with a party after our Qigong class.”

“It was a very pleasant surprise to have the other teachers like Nilaginee and Belinda attending as well and the beautiful cake baked just for me.”

“It is nice to celebrate with people that get what the journey I am going through is like.”

Montse credits gentle movement, breathing exercises and social connection as important parts of her overall wellbeing.

Good friends and fellow yoga participants Francesca and Liz described Montse as an inspiration to everyone around her. “Dearest Montse, you’re an inspiration to us all. Eight decades young and still shining bright, your strength and determination are admirable.”

“You’ve faced your fair share of challenges, but your spirit remains strong. Your smile and your stories bring joy to those around you.”

“Wishing you many more years of living life with passion, purpose and joy!”

The WellAhead program is a holistic wellness initiative, co-designed with consumers to support and empower people living with and beyond cancer. Through a range of evidence-informed activities, participants can improve their physical, emotional and social wellbeing in a supportive environment.

The Tuesday Chair Yoga and Wednesday Qigong classes delivered in partnership with Whittlesea U3A continue to provide participants with opportunities to stay active, build confidence and connect with others who understand their experiences.

Northern Health staff are encouraged to discuss the WellAhead program with eligible patients living with cancer and other chronic diseases. Programs like Chair Yoga and Qigong can provide valuable opportunities for physical activity, mindfulness, social connection and overall wellbeing.

As Montse celebrates her 80th birthday, she reminds us that wellbeing is not just about treatment. It is about community, movement, resilience and finding joy in every stage of life’s journey.

Happy Birthday, Montse, and thank you for being such an inspiring part of the WellAhead family!
