Podiatry


Podiatry is an Allied Health profession focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot, ankle and lower limb problems. Podiatrists at Northern Health utilise a wide range of evidence-based practice guidelines to assist patients with foot ulcerations, ingrown toenails and musculoskeletal issues.

Northern Health Podiatry provides a range of inpatient and outpatient services across Northern Health. We work closely in interdisciplinary teams alongside other healthcare professionals including:

  • Vascular Surgeons
  • Orthopaedic Surgeons
  • Orthotists
  • Geriatricians
  • Wound Clinical Nurse Consultants
  • Endocrinologists
  • Infectious Disease Physicians
  • Diabetes Educators
  • Physiotherapists
  • Dieticians

What to expect from the service?

Patients can expect a high standard of evidence-based quality clinical care when accessing Podiatry services at Northern Health. Staff regularly participate in research, professional development and conference presentations to ensure their practice continues to be up to date.

We place a significant emphasis on helping patients to achieve their goals. This could include returning to work after developing a foot problem requiring expert care. The podiatry staff provide expert wound management planning and care, nail surgery procedure and biomechanical assessments.


Northern Health Podiatry is integrated into a variety of clinics and services, these include:

Outpatients:

  • Community Therapy Services
  • Chronic Wound Service (CWS)
  • Foot Procedure Unit (High-risk foot service)
  • Falls & Balance Service (FABS)
  • Hospital Admission Risk Program (HARP)
  • Musculoskeletal Clinic
  • National Disability Insurance Service (NDIS)
  • Total Contact Casting (TCC) Clinic
  • Transitional Care Program (TCP)

Inpatients:

  • Acute and Sub acute Inpatient Service (including weekends/public holidays)
  • Renal Specialist Podiatrist in Dialysis

All external referrals from healthcare professionals must be faxed to Community Access: Fax: 03 8405 8616. Our preference is for referrals to be structured in ISBAR format please.
