The Addiction Psychiatry and Toxicology (APT) service provides integrated specialised assessments, diagnoses, and clinical care for individuals who are grappling with substance use disorders and toxicity, including nicotine addiction.
This service is available only to individuals admitted to Northern Hospital’s Emergency Department, currently admitted on an inpatient unit or who are registered consumers of Northern Mental Health Division’s community, inpatient, or residential services.
Consumers may be seen in the Emergency Department, on the Inpatient Medical, Surgical or Mental Health units or at a community or residential mental health site.

- The clinic is designed to cater to consumers requiring short-term follow-up, diagnostic clarification, and management for AOD use or toxicology complications. The APT specialist clinic is a non-urgent service and not a crisis service.
- Monday and Friday afternoons
Internal referrals only are accepted for consultations.
What to expect from the service?
- APT is a voluntary service, consumers are to consent to seek treatment.
- The consumer must have an open episode in Northern Health Mental Health Services or;
- The consumer is admitted under Northern Hospital ED, Inpatient or Psychiatric wards
- All referrals will be triaged and prioritised as clinically indicated
