Haematology (Blood disorders)


We provide comprehensive care, both inpatient and outpatient services, for a wide range of Haematological disorders including:

  • Blood cancers: Acute and Chronic Leukaemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma, Myeloproliferative Neoplasm, Myelodysplastic Syndromes
  • Thrombosis (blood clots) and Bleeding Disorders
  • Haemoglobinopathies (Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Disease)
  • Full Blood Count abnormalities
  • Iron disorders
  • Obstetric Haematological disorders

Our team comprise of:

  • Consultant Haematologists
    โ€“ mostly co-appointed as Laboratory Haematologists at Northern Pathology
    Victoria (NPV)

    โ€“ with a variety of areas of sub-speciality expertise, research interests and links to quaternary centres
  • Clinical and Laboratory Registrars enrolled in specialty training
  • Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Co-ordinators

We provide supportive care for patients with blood cancers throughout treatment and beyond with the WellAhead program and Survivorship Clinic.

What to expect from the service?

Any patient with a blood disorder can be referred to us. All referrals will be promptly reviewed and patients will be contacted with an appointment date (made according to medical needs), either via post or telephone.

Whether you are an inpatient or outpatient, a discharge summary or letter will also be sent to provide your GP with the latest update of your care. Interpreter services are provided as required.

Public outpatient clinics

  • Held daily at either the Northern Hospital Epping or Craigieburn Health Services.
  • There are also weekly Virtual Specialist Clinics (Thrombosis and General Haematology) to service patients in the Hume region and surroundings.

Day Oncology and Day Medical Services:

  • Chemotherapy and monoclonal antibody infusions
  • Administration of blood products
  • Hickman line and PICC dressings
  • Iron infusions
  • Venesections
  • Pre and Post Autograft supportive care
  • Apheresis (red cell and plasma exchange)

Inpatient services are conducted through Ward 5 at Northern Hospital Epping including:

  • Acute leukaemia induction and consolidation
  • High dose chemotherapy for newly diagnosed or relapsed lymphoma and aggressive myeloma
  • Management of complex clotting and bleeding disorders

Urgent calls can be made through the Northern Hospital Switchboard โ€“ request to speak to the on-call Haematology Registrar

Acutely unwell patients should be directed to the nearest Emergency Department
