The Northern Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) consists of eighteen beds and sees over 1000 admissions each year. The ICU is staffed by qualified critical care nurses and intensive care specialists. The ICU also provides outreach services to the hospital – liaison nurse, medical emergency team, nutritional, and tracheotomy services.

As well as medical and nursing staff, the Intensive Care Department’s multidisciplinary team comprises a variety of health care professionals including physiotherapists, pharmacists, counsellers, ward clerks and patient service assistants.

The Intensive Care Department is committed to the educational and professional development of its staff.
Educational opportunities are facilitated through regular scheduled inservice education sessions and staff members are encouraged to participate in educational and research projects of their own choice. A wide selection of Intensive Care literature is available and attendance at continuing education events is encouraged. A range quality activities are undertaken regularly.

The ICU is accredited for advanced medical training in intensive care medicine and critical care nurse training.
