Huge Funding Boost for Northern Health's Academic & Research Precinct

Northern Health has received funding of $14 million in the 2009 Federal Budget to go towards its Academic & Research Precinct.

Northern Health’s CEO, Greg Pullen, said the funding announcement was a huge boost for the project.

“I’m pleased to advise that $14 million of capital funding was included in the Federal Budget as the Commonwealth Government’s contribution towards the construction of Northern Health’s Academic & Research Precinct,” Mr Pullen said.

“This funding will assist Northern Health in establishing a world class Academic & Research Precinct to train future health professionals such as doctors, nurses and allied health staff.”

“The facility will help Northern Health to attract and retain the best clinical staff, improving access for patients to quality healthcare in Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs,” he said.

“Both La Trobe University and The University of Melbourne have committed $7.2 million each to the project whilst the State Government has already contributed $3 million towards the planning and development – meaning a total of $31.4 million has been pledged.”

“This is fantastic news for Northern Health, The University of Melbourne, Latrobe University and the community at large,” Mr Pullen said.

“We are hopeful that the State will also contribute another $11 million on top of their initial $3 million to match the total funding announced in the Federal Budget by the Commonwealth.  This would see $42.4 million being committed to the $47.4 million project.”

Mr Pullen said significant planning and preparation for developing Northern Health’s Academic & Research Precinct at The Northern Hospital has already been completed.

“The Academic & Research Precinct will play a major role in training future healthcare staff as well as helping to provide the best possible care and shortest waiting times for our patients,” Mr Pullen said.
