Hospital Expansion

Mental Health Expansion/Short Stay Unit/Maternity Expansion

The Northern Hospital’s Mental Health Unit is currently undergoing expansion at the rear of the Cooper St site.

The $28 million redevelopment, which will add an additional 25 beds to the Mental Health Unit, is currently in early stages of construction and will be completed by June 2010.

The redevelopment also includes a Short Stay Unit at the front of the Hospital that will add 14 additional beds and is expected to be completed by late May 2009.

In addition to these redevelopments, more than $2 million from the 2008/09 state budget has been dedicated to the planned expansion of The Northern Hospital’s Maternity Department.

The expansion is currently in the planning phase and will include six new maternity beds to cater for an estimated 500 additional births each year.  This project is expected to be completed by the middle of 2010.

Stage 2 Redevelopment
TNH new wing
The $25 million expansion of The Northern Hospital was completed in April 2007.

This redevelopment included the creation of  64-bed new medical inpatient beds and a major extension to the Hospital's Outpatients Department.

Also incorporated was a refurbishment of the Emergency Department's Triage and Waiting Areas to provide greater privacy and comfort for Emergency patients.

The Emergency Department works were finished in late 2006, after three months during which staff and patients used temporary facilities.

The Northern Hospital's Stage 2 Redevelopment required a major extension westward onto formerly vacant land purchased by the Hospital.

Inpatients were moved into the new section of the hospital in January 2007.  The Northern Hospital is currently working with the project consultants appointed by DHS to prepare the business case for stages 2B and 3 of the redevelopment. The business case will be submitted for government to consider our project in the next round of capital development.
