Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding Day Stay The Breastfeeding Day Stay was established in July 2000, and as part of The Northern Hospital, offers the community health care services where they are needed - close to home. This service is for mothers seeking information, assistance, education, reassurance and counselling on breastfeeding and infant feeding issues. The Day Stay service enables the mother to have a personalised consultation with a Lactation Consultant who will assess and provide you with a written breastfeeding plan at the end of your visit. You have the option of staying for a full day whereby morning tea and lunch will be provided as part of the service. It provides the mother with the opportunity of discussing any questions about infant feeding, breastfeeding, sleep patterns and settling techniques, or any other aspects of parenting.

Mothers with babies up to 6 months can be admitted to the Breastfeeding Day Stay service.  The service is available on Monday and Wednesday  8.30 am to 4 pm.

The Day Stay is situated on the 1st floor of The Northern Hospital, in the Maternity and Women’s Health Unit.  Daily parking is available for a set fee.

Other Lactation Services:

Outpatient Clinic
A 1-2 hour session with a Lactation Consultant is available to all mothers as an outpatient appointment at the Northern Hospital during pregnancy, or after being discharged from a Melbourne maternity hospital.

Breastfeeding Classes
This 2 hour session is held the first Friday of the month from 10 am-12 pm on the 1st floor of The Northern Hospital in the Maternity and Women’s Health Unit. To book in call 8405 8202 or ask for a booking form at your antenatal visits or classes.

Inpatient Referrals
Mothers needing additional breastfeeding support and advice can ask to see a Lactation Consultant during her stay in The Northern Hospital.

Breast Pump Hire
Ameda and Medela electric pumps are available for hire. Education about how to use the equipment is also provided.

Craigieburn Health Service
A Breastfeeding Day Stay is also available at our Craigieburn campus, 350 Craigieburn Rd West, Craigieburn (opposite the public golf course).  Call 8338 3000.
