Day Procedure & Endoscopy Unit

The Day Procedure & Endoscopy Unit provides a range of specialist surgical services in a well-equipped environment.

The service commenced operation in February 1999 and has performed thousands of procedures since.

Day surgery continues to be an expanding area of health as the advent of new equipment and technologies provides us with the ability to perform complex surgery in the day procedure setting.

Monitoring of patients is conducted from pre-admission through to post-discharge, in line with developed unit protocols.

Patients are referred from a wide range of services including LMOs and specialist consulting rooms. The Unit also takes patients from Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Northern Hospital.

For the graduate nurse working in the Day Procedure & Endoscopy Unit a wide range of experience is offered.

The following areas will provide graduate nurses with an opportunity to gain diverse skills, knowledge and satisfaction as well as an appreciation for the challenge of day procedure nursing:

· Admission and discharge
· Anaesthetics
· Scrub and scout
· First stage recovery
· Second stage recovery

In order to assist your rotation in the Day Procedure & Endoscopy Unit, graduate nurses will work with different preceptors (experienced, preoperative nurses). The staff and preceptors continually strive to identify learning opportunities and maintain excellence within the Graduate Nurse Program.
