Short Stay Unit

Short Stay Unit is currently an 8 bed unit (expanding to 14 beds in 2008/2009) located within the Emergency Department. It is a vibrant, acute care area catering for the needs of patients requiring specialised treatment, without the need for ongoing admission.  Short Stay Unit provides patients with a full range of specialist medical, nursing, allied health and psycho-social services, with experts in the field always available. You could expect to care for patients with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions including Cardiac Chest Pain requiring telemetry (monitoring), Biliary Colic, Pyelonephritis, Asthma and Cellulitis.

Nurses gain many skills from working in this area including teamwork, communication, patient assessment, management of IV fluids and blood transfusions, venepuncture, ECG’s, management of pain, and antibiotic administration.
