Professional Development for Clinical Educators

Supervisory skills are an important aspect of clinical education. There are a range of professional development opportunities for all Northern Health allied health staff involved in student clinical education. Supervision of both allied health staff and students is guided by the Northern Health Allied Health Supervision Framework.

There are several clinical education/supervision professional development activities conducted at Northern Health on a regular basis:

  • “Supervision in Action.” This program is designed mainly for Grade 2 and 3 allied health staff. It is a 2.5 day course, open to allied health staff across Northern Health and runs 2-3 times each year. The objectives of the course are to:
    - Enhance consistency of supervision practice across Northern Health allied health
    - Expand knowledge of supervision theory
    - Develop supervisory skills
    - Explore new strategies for supervision
    - Learn to better manage self as a means of being a more effective supervisor
    - Develop interprofessional practice and provide the opportunity for shared learning.
  • “Getting Started in Clinical Education” and "My Teaching Rules" are workshops designed for staff with little or no clinical education experience. The workshops focus on several key aspects of clinical education such as preparing for a student on placement, learning styles and effective feedback procedures. The session is aimed at staff who will have direct/primary responsibility for students and who want to develop their core clinical education skills.
  • Northern Health's Clinical Education Team are very happy to provide targeted inservices, workshops and reflective/debriefing sessions in response to the need whereover possible. Such sessions can be tailored for Coordinators, steering groups, departments or interprofessional teams.

Northern Health Allied Health clinical educators are also supported to attend externally-run professional development courses, such as:

- The Advancing Clinical Education (ACE) Course, run by LaTrobe, Deakin and Monash Universities
- Supervision courses run by the universities from which Northern Health take allied health students
- Post Graduate study in health professional education.
