Podiatry Services at Northern Health

The podiatry department at Northern Health has a role in the acute, continuing care and ambulatory settings and covers all aspects of podiatric care from paediatrics to management of the high-risk foot. Podiatrists at Northern Health work within several multi and interdisciplinary services including falls and balance, chronic wound services and high risk foot service.

Northern Health Podiatry department is one of the largest in Melbourne’s public health sector, consisting of approximately 12 Podiatrists, with experience ranging from grade 1 to grade 4. The team operates across the five campuses of Northern Health, as well as providing an outreach service to local Supported Residential facilities.  All Podiatrists are supported by a strong supervision framework which is facilitated by senior staff in the department.

Podiatrists keen to improve clinical skills while developing other areas of expertise such as research and quality projects will find there are many opportunities for personal development at Northern Health. The service is also committed to advancing skills and experience through attendance at continuing education programs, conferences, and team building activities.

Service and Programs

Acute and Community Care Programs
(The Northern Hospital/Craigieburn Health Service/Panch Health Service)
Podiatry services at the Northern Hospital are provided to both inpatients as well as outpatients through the inter-disciplinary High Risk Foot Service (HRFS)   Patients with an acute foot complication are prioritised for service.

Cragieburn Health Service services include:  Adult rehabilitation, childrens services, diabetes and wound services

At Panch Health Service Podiatry is a member of inter-disciplinary chronic wound service.

Continuing Care Programs (Sub-Acute) 
(Bundoora Extended Care Centre/Broadmeadows Health Service)
At Bundoora Extended Care Centre Podiatry services are provided through:

  • Community Therapy Service (CTS)
  • Inpatients
  • Home based services
  • Supported Residential Service
  • Interdisciplinary clinics involving podiatry: Falls and Balance & Chronic Wound Service

At Broadmeadows Health Service Podiatrists provide a wide range of services to outpatients in the areas of:

  • Diabetes Care
  • Wound Care
  • Community Therapy Service (CTS)

Inpatient services are provided in the areas of:

  • Rehabilitation
  • Geriatric Evaluation and Management
  • Palliative care.

Student Clinical Education Information 
The Northern Health Podiatry Dept offers students clinical placement across all campuses of Northern Health for Latrobe University students. Students are able to gain exposure to a wide variety of different podiatry services and clinics across Northern Health.  

Podiatry students - please be aware that during your clinical placement you may be placed at more than one site, however it is unlikely that you will be able to attend or take part in all clinics across Northern Health. Please contact your supervising clinician with any queries.

Research and Achievements
The Podiatry Service actively supports podiatrists wanting to undertake clinical research in their field of speciality.
