The main function of the emergency department is to treat patients who are suffering from a serious illness or injury that could lead to severe complications if medical treatment is not received quickly.
Illnesses/injuries that are not serious, or are long-standing, may be better managed by your local doctor or an after-hours medical centre. These services are better suited to such conditions because you are more likely to be treated by a doctor who is familiar with your medical history and you are less likely to wait for extended periods.
GP Helpline and Nurse on Call: If you are unable to visit your local doctor, GP Helpline and Nurse on Call are Victorian phone services providing immediate, expert advice from a registered nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The registered nurse will complete an assessment and based on your symptoms and may offer you a call back from a GP.
• Monday to Friday from 11pm – 7.30am
• Saturday from 6pm
• Sunday and Public Holidays all day.
