Orthoptics Service at Northern Health

Orthoptists are allied health professionals in the field of eye health care. Orthoptists are involved in the process of the detection, diagnosis and treatment of vision and eye disorders. Rehabilitation services are also provided to people with low vision by orthoptists.  Orthoptists exclusively specialise in treating patients with strabismus (eye misalignment or ‘lazy eye’) and other eye movement abnormalities.

The orthoptic department has a strong commitment to evidence based practice to ensure that the best possible care is provided for our patients. We understand that research is the key to evidence based practice and actively encourage contribution to the field of research. At Northern Health, the orthoptic team consists of 4 orthoptists.  They work closely alongside ophthalmologists, assisting them in the Ophthalmology clinic at the Northern Hospital. They also work in independent orthoptic lead clinics at the Northern Hospital and Craigieburn Health Service screening diabetic patients for diabetic eye disease and children for vision problems.
