Acute Care The Northern Hospital
Acute Inpatient Services are located at The Northern Hospital only and access is via The Northern Hospital Emergency Department.
Continuing Care Bundoora Extended Care Centre and Broadmeadows Health Service
Northern Health Continuing Care offers two streams of inpatient care. Eligibility is to clients within, but not exclusive to, the Northern Region of Melbourne. A full range of specialist medical, nursing, allied health and psychosocial services are offered on campus to help patients improve their overall wellness and ability to manage day-to-day activities.
Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Provides services to adult clients (usually older people) with complex, chronic or multiple conditions associated with aging, cognitive dysfunction, chronic illness, activity limitation and participation restriction.
Rehabilitation Provides services to adult clients requiring admission for intensive rehabilitation (fast stream) who have had a decline in function following an acute illness, injury or surgical intervention. Rehabilitation care stream can also cater for older clients requiring a slow stream rehabilitation.
Exclusion criteria for Continuing Care Inpatient Services include but are not limited to:
- Requiring further acute medical intervention/investigations that cannot be readily provided in a sub acute facility
- Medical instability
- Acute psychiatric illness
- Respite/Convalescence

Palliative Care Broadmeadows Health Service
The Unit has a highly motivated and dedicated team of specialised staff, including Palliative Care Nurses, a Palliative Care Consultant, Registrar, and RMO, Pastoral Care worker, Social Worker, and a volunteer team servicing 20 palliative care beds. We offer music therapy, allied health, and bereavement support services.
The Palliative Care Unit is open to all adult palliative care patients, regardless of diagnosis or age. Admissions will be accepted for patients with a progressive terminal illness and a life expectancy of less than 3 months for:
- Symptom Management
- Terminal Care
- Respite Care
All patients must have a doctor's referral to access the in-patient and outpatient service.
