Welcome to Northern Health

At Northern Health, we aim to offer rewarding and enjoyable student clinical placements. It is our aim to provide you with as many opportunities as possible for personal and professional growth during your time on placement with us.

Northern Health Allied Health comprises more than 200 staff from twelve different disciplines (Audiology, Dietetics, Exercise Physiology, Occupational Therapy, Orthoptics, Orthotics, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Social Work, Speech Pathology, Recreational Therapy, and Hand Therapy). Northern Health is situated in one of Melbourne’s major growth corridors – which has meant significant expansion of the Health Service to address population need and a virtual doubling of allied health staffing since the Health Service opened in July 2000.

In allied health we have a strong commitment to fostering person centred, interprofessional practice and we encourage our clinicians to be evidence based and critically reflective about the care provided to our community. We have developed an Allied Health Supervision Framework and continue to work hard to foster professional development opportunities for our staff and students. Our belief in the importance of research, learning and applying the evidence in practice is demonstrated through two key positions in Allied Health: a Professor of Allied Health (conjoint appointment with LaTrobe University) – Professor Keith Hill and a Health Service Manager for Allied Health Learning and Research – Robyn Smith. Both of these people, together with the Allied Health Service Managers for the different disciplines, have key roles in leading and shaping the Allied Health Clinical School at Northern Health and the learning & research opportunities we provide. We are aiming to train health professionals for the future – highly competent practitioners who are ready to effectively meet the challenges of working in health care.
