A host of noxious behaviours have been identified as part of a culture of bullying within the nursing profession. These include backstabbing, belittling, withholding information and having one's accent ridiculed. Such experiences are considered to be a major reason nurses leave the profession, and thus a key factor contributing to ongoing staff shortages.
Nursing students and newly registered nurses are particularly vulnerable, a recent report in the Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing claims, with many subjected to such treatment during clinical placement.
But Robynne Cooke, chief nursing officer of Northern Health in Victoria, has vowed to leverage her leadership position to spur cultural change. |
