Intensive Care Medical Research

  • Research Coorindator: Dr Angaj Ghosh
  • Research Nurses: Mary Park, Olga Burgess, Yasmin Sungar

The Northern ICU is a contributor to the most successful intensive care clinical trials group in the world, the ANZICS CTG. With Mary Park as our research nurse, we are now in the big league!

We have three clinical trials approved & recruiting.

  • Cyto-FAB trial in early septic shock.
  • CHEST trial of saline versus hydroxyethyl starch colloid for fluid resuscitation.
  • NGAL, a new method for detecting patients at risk of renal failure before any change in creatinine occurs by measuring their serum neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL), and then treating them with sodium bicarbonate. The NGAL machine is TGA approved, and works like a blood glucose meter.
  • DahLIA a randomised controlled multicentre trial of dexmedetomidine for patients with agitation and delirium.
  • Medical Emergency Teams and patient outcome
