The Northern Hospital is a 325 inpatient bed facility providing a broad range of medical, surgical, and obstetric services with over 20,000 admissions, and 50,000 emergency attendances per annum. The Northern Hospital's Critical Care Department incorporates the Hospital's Intensive Care Unit and Coronary Care Unit, and treats close to 2,000 patients each year.  The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) consists of ten beds and sees over 700 admissions per annum.  The ICU is staffed by qualified critical care nurses and intensive care specialists. The ICU also provide outreach services to the hospital - liaison nurse, medical emergency team, nutritional, tracheotomy, and acute pain services.

The Coronary Care Unit (CCU) consits of four acute beds and eight telemetry beds and cares for over 1,000 admissions each year.   The CCU is staffed by a team of critical care nurses and cardiologists. These units provide care to a diverse patient case-mix which assists our staff and trainees to their develop their skills and competence. As well as medical and nursing staff the Critical Care Department's multidisciplinary team is made up of a variety of health care professionals including physiotherapists, pharmacists, counsellers, ward clerks and patient service assistants. The Ciritical Care Department is committed to the educational and professional development of its staff.

Educational opportunities are facilitated through regular scheduled inservice education sessions and staff members are encouraged to participate in educational and research projects of their own choice. A wide selection of Critical Care literature is available and attendance at continuing education events is encouraged. A range quality activities are undertaken regularly.  The ICU is accredited for advanced medical training in intensive care medicine and the CCU is accredited for advanced cardiology training. On top of this both units are accredited for critical care certificate nurse training.
