Exercise Physiology Services at Northern Health

Exercise Physiology clinical services are provided at three sites across Northern Health. There are four exercise physiologists. Our services are provided in outpatient services and involve some inpatient intervention where needed.

We strive to provide patient centred care in a multidisciplinary team based environment. We ensure that our practice is evidence based in all our services through:

  • Best practice focused presentations across the sites
  • Active participation in research and
  • Support for staff education from short courses to formal post graduation qualifications.

Exercise Physiologists sit within the physiotherapy management structure at Northern Health but meet regularly as a team to work on discipline specific tasks. Exercise Physiologists have a large role in designing and facilitating of exercise programs/groups.  These programs range from weight management programs to low-level balance groups.  Exercise physiologists participate actively in community integration of clients following therapy. This often means developing relationships with local gyms and community centres. Exercise Physiologists also have an active role in the diabetes care teams at both BHS and CHS.

Northern Health has the benefit of modern facilities. Our subacute services have benefited from the DHS equipment funding in 2008, which has given us access to state of the art equipment such as a Balance Master, several Diagnostic Ultrasound Units and a comprehensive variety of gym equipment.
