Northern Health is delighted to announce that our Private Practice Midwife program, in collaboration with My Midwives, won the Health Minister’s Victorian Public Healthcare Award for Excellence in Women’s Health.

The Collaborative Midwifery Private Practice Program at Northern Health continues to deliver more choice and improved health outcomes for mothers and babies in Melbourne’s north. Our private practice midwifery program allows women to have the same midwife throughout their pregnancy, birth and post-natal period.

The program grew from increasing public awareness of home births, coupled with the limited choice for women in the north for continuity of midwifery care models. Evidence shows that continuity of care and freedom of choice coupled with access to medical services is extremely important to women.

Northern Health partnered with My Midwives to provide a collaborative model of care. The model provides women and families access to a private midwife to provide continuity of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care, with medical support when required.

The awards were presented at an event on Thursday, 26 October, where Northern Health were also highly commended finalists in the category of Whole-of-hospital model for responding to family violence. Northern Health was the first organisation in Victoria to establish a train-the-trainer model for family violence, as well as providing three distinct levels of training for staff across the health service.

The Victorian Public Healthcare Awards are an annual celebration of excellence, dedication and innovation in public health, and Northern Health would like to congratulate all involved, in particular Ms. Roslyn Payne who has led both projects and the Midwifery and obstetric teams. This is a fantastic achievement and we are pleased and proud to see this hard work and dedication recognised.
